Meet Shanelle

Shanelle Kaul is a Correspondent for CBS News.

She’s a passionate, well-travelled journalist with expertise in handling national and international breaking news.

Shanelle is based in New York -- and reports to the CBS News Special Events and Newsgathering units. You'll find her work on CBS Mornings, the CBS Evening News, CBS Saturday Morning, the CBS News 24/7 and Newspath.

Shanelle is also a board member for the Newswomen's Club of New York, serving as the Deputy Vice President of Programming. 

Experience

Prior to joining CBS News, Kaul was an anchor and reporter for CP24, Toronto's #1 Breaking News Channel. 

 

During her more than 4 years at CP24,

Kaul moderated primetime panels covering international headlines including Donald Trump's impeachment trial, the war in Ukraine, and the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa.

 

She also anchored network programs in Canada - including Bell Media's 24-hour national news show, CTV News Channel, CTV’s national morning show, Your Morning, and guest-hosted CTV’s national talk show, The Social.

Notable Work

Before joining CP24 in August 2018, Kaul was a weekend anchor and daily reporter with CTV News Edmonton, where her coverage of the Fort McMurray wildfires was featured on CTV National News.

 

Her broadcasting career was launched at Global Toronto’s assignment desk in 2011, where she developed an early passion for breaking news, coordinating coverage for national stories like the Elliot Lake mall collapse and the Eaton Centre shooting rampage. She joined the Global Regina newsroom in 2012, and was quickly promoted to weekend anchor and later, weekday morning anchor.

Background

Born in Sri Lanka, Kaul grew up in Toronto and is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Journalism. She was awarded The Ticker Club’s Floyd Chalmers Prize for Excellence in Business Journalism in 2012, and returned to campus in 2021 to teach news production to second-year students for two years.

As a child of immigrant parents who fled war-torn countries, Kaul is deeply passionate about human rights and social justice issues and works to elevate diverse stories.

She's also an avid traveler – visiting more than 25 countries, and written about several of them for the Huffington Post
